Your SHBG value tells you how much of your testosterone circulates bound, and so is unavailable to your muscles and bones. SHBG stands for sex hormone binding globulin, a protein from the liver that holds testosterone and oestradiol in your blood, and whatever is held never reaches the cell. That makes this value relevant to anyone training seriously, because it moves both ways. A strict cut or a large endurance volume raises SHBG, so free testosterone falls while the total still looks acceptable. Insulin resistance and visceral fat push SHBG down instead, so the total looks low while the free fraction is normal. Two athletes, two opposite movements, and in both cases a total that misleads.

A blood test in Amsterdam without a GP referral takes place at an Atalmedial or Labplusarts site. The sites are spread across Zuidoost, Nieuw-West, Zuid, Oost, West, Noord and the centre. Whether you can walk in depends on the site, as each lab reports it. The list on this page shows that per location.

No Dutch GP or Dutch health insurance is involved: you order and pay online. At an Atalmedial site, we arrange your referral through ZorgDomein after you order. Allow one business day; orders after 17:00 or at the weekend start the next business day. ZorgDomein then emails you a barcode to show with a valid passport or ID card.

Without a BSN, print the referral form from the link in that email and hand it in. Your order confirmation alone is not enough at the desk. At the Labplusarts site in Zuid, you book nothing yourself. We schedule the appointment and email you the open times.
