What is tested?
This panel measures 7 blood values, of which the blood count itself contains dozens of underlying values:
- Blood count: a Complete Blood Count including hemoglobin, hematocrit and your red cell indices.
- Iron status: Ferritin, Iron, Transferrin and Transferrin Saturation, calculated at no extra draw.
- Vitamins for blood production: Vitamin B12 and Folate.
What can this test tell you?
The results show how your red blood cells, your complete iron status and your B vitamins compare to the reference ranges. For endurance athletes, that is the chain that carries oxygen to your muscles: a shrinking iron store shows first in your ferritin, long before your hemoglobin drops.

How is the sample collected?
For this blood test, a staff member draws a small tube of blood at a certified location. You can choose from 700+ collection sites, so there is almost always a location near you.
You only need your appointment confirmation and a valid ID. The draw usually takes just a few minutes.
When is this test useful?

What do the results mean?
What the results mean depends on your personal situation and training load. Endurance athletes often run somewhat lower ferritin values; that is exactly why the pattern across several measurements is informative.
Always discuss any deviating values with your GP, so you know what the results may mean for you personally.
Preparation
Preferably plan a morning draw: your serum iron fluctuates through the day, and a morning draw makes measurements most comparable. Strict fasting is not required.
Avoid extremely heavy training the day before the draw and drink enough water. If in doubt, discuss your situation with your GP.
What happens after the results?

A complete blood count is not a single value but a panel. In one EDTA tube, an automated cell counter counts your red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. The analyser also determines the amount of haemoglobin and the size of the cells. That is why a blood count itself cannot be too high or too low. Individual components can. The values only gain meaning together. One deviating number says little. The pattern says a great deal.

Serum iron only measures how much iron is circulating in your blood at that moment; ferritin describes the reserve behind it. That reserve empties before your haemoglobin falls, so a low ferritin can already cause symptoms while your blood count still looks normal. Ferritin also rises with inflammation, infection and liver strain, which is why it can only be read properly alongside a CRP. Active Vitamin B12
Active Vitamin B12 measures the bioavailable B12 your cells can utilise. For active individuals, B12 may support oxygen transport, energy metabolism, and recovery. This test could help optimise your performance-related nutritional status.
Basic Blood Count
A basic blood count measures three core values in your blood: hemoglobin, white blood cells and platelets. Together they say something about oxygen transport, immune defence and clotting. It is a simple baseline check, without the red-cell indices and white-cell differential of a complete blood count.
Basophils
Basophils are the rarest white blood cells in your differential. In adults the basophil value sits between 0 and 0.2 x10⁹/l. Your result shows it as a percentage and as an absolute count. Work with the absolute figure, because the percentage moves with the other cell types. This value does not respond measurably to training load or recovery. A result of 0.0 x10⁹/l is normal and calls for nothing. Only a rise that persists without explanation should be assessed by a doctor. Below you can read what your number means. You will also see which values in this blood count do reflect load.
Bicarbonate
Bicarbonate plays a role in buffering lactic acid during intense exercise. Monitoring your levels can help you understand your body's recovery capacity and metabolic efficiency.
