Do you train hard and notice your energy or endurance is lagging behind what you are used to? This can be linked to your iron stores. A ferritin blood test measures ferritin, the protein that stores iron, showing how much iron your body keeps in reserve.
You order the test online, choose a sample point near you, and receive your results online, usually within 2 working days of the blood draw. Every result is reviewed by a BIG-registered doctor, and no referral from your GP is needed.
Why this test?
Ferritin is the protein that stores iron, so your ferritin level can say something about your iron stores. For anyone training intensively that matters, as iron plays a role in transporting oxygen in your blood.
A ferritin test gives you a concrete data point, not a diagnosis, but data you can take further with your doctor. It may help put symptoms such as fatigue into context.
Who is this test for?
This test can be of interest if you:
- train intensively or do endurance sport, such as running, cycling, or triathlon
- feel tired or low on energy more often than your training load explains
- notice your recovery or endurance is slipping
- eat a plant-based diet and want to keep monitoring your iron stores
A low ferritin is among the more common deficiencies in endurance athletes, partly due to the demands of intensive training. This test can help you keep an eye on your iron status.
What is tested?
This test measures a single blood value:
- Ferritin: the protein that stores iron and reflects your iron stores. To learn more about this value, read our explanation of ferritin.
Your ferritin value shows how much iron your body has in reserve, something a single serum iron measurement does not always reveal.
What can this test tell you?
A ferritin measurement can indicate whether your iron stores are on the low or high side. A low ferritin can point to depleted stores and is often linked to fatigue and reduced endurance, exactly what can get in the way of your performance.
A high ferritin can, among other things, fit with inflammation in the body. What your value means depends on your situation and is assessed by the doctor.
How is the sample collected?
For this test, blood is drawn at a certified sample point. There are 650+ locations across the Netherlands, so you can often choose one close to home or your gym.
After ordering online, you pick a sample point and a time that suits you. The blood is drawn by trained staff.
When is this test useful?
You might consider this test when:
- you feel persistently tired while your training does not explain it
- you notice your endurance or recovery is slipping
- you want to back up your training plan with data
- you follow a plant-based diet and want to track your iron
Ferritin does not depend on a cycle, so you can have blood drawn at any time, which makes it easy to fit a measurement into your training schedule.
What do the results mean?
Your result shows your ferritin alongside a reference range, so you can see whether your value falls within the expected range. What counts as a normal ferritin level varies by lab, age, and sex, so numbers alone say little.
In athletes, a value just within range can still warrant attention if you have symptoms. That is why a BIG-registered doctor always reviews your result and places it in context.
What happens after the results?
Your result is usually online within 2 working days of the blood draw, with your value, a reference range, and a clear explanation, so you can see where you stand and adjust your training accordingly.
Every blood test result includes a professional assessment from a BIG-registered doctor. For treatment decisions, discuss your results with your GP.
Frequently Asked Questions
For a ferritin measurement you usually do not need to fast. If you take iron supplements, ask your doctor whether to pause them shortly before the test.
A hard effort or an inflammation can temporarily raise ferritin. So prefer a calm moment, not right after a hard training session.
A low ferritin can point to low iron stores and is often linked to fatigue and reduced endurance. The doctor assesses your result and discusses any next steps.
€63,-, blood draw included. You pay yourself, with no separate draw fee.
No. After you order we create the referral through ZorgDomein within one business day; order after 17:00 or at the weekend and it starts the next business day. The ZorgDomein email gives you a barcode for the draw site. At a few draw sites you book a time yourself on your order page, or we book it for you.
No. Self-requested testing is not in the basic Dutch insurance. You pay it yourself; your deductible (eigen risico) stays as it is.
One business day, a day more after 17:00 or at the weekend: that is how long the referral email takes, and without it you cannot go. After that: walk-in at some draw sites, by appointment at the rest. The location shows which.
Barcode from the ZorgDomein email plus a valid ID. The barcode on your phone does the job, no printing. No BSN? Then no barcode, and you print the referral form from the link in the email.
Take medication as usual unless your own doctor says otherwise. Some tests ask for no alcohol for 24 hours or no heavy training for 48 hours. That is on the test and in your order instructions.
About a quarter of an hour. You show your barcode and ID, then they take the blood.
Yes. Every result is assessed by a BIG-registered doctor and explained in your account. Treatment you discuss with your GP.
One of the independent, certified laboratories in the national network of Enhancedhealth. Those laboratories also run the draw sites; Enhancedhealth does not own them. Reference values can deviate a bit per lab.
No. Your test does not go via the GP and does not enter your medical record. A healthcare provider gets data only with your written consent, and nothing is sold. Anonymous does not work: name, date of birth and a valid ID are needed for a valid result.

Preparation
-
Been ill? Wait a little
RequiredHad a fever, an infection or a vaccination in the past 2 weeks? Wait with the draw until you are fully recovered. These values react to inflammation and would give a distorted picture.
-
Preferably fasting
RecommendedComing fasting gives a slightly cleaner value, but it is not required. If it suits you, eat nothing from 22:00 the evening before and drink only water.
- Water is always fine. Drink as usual beforehand, it makes the draw easier.
- Take your usual medication, unless your own doctor told you otherwise.
Extend this panel
Same draw, no second appointment.
