Why you do not need a referral
In the Dutch system, your huisarts decides which blood tests are ordered — and without one, or without a Dutch-speaking consultation, routine testing is hard to arrange. Private blood testing works differently: you decide what you want to know, and a registered doctor assesses the outcome.
That makes it a practical route for internationals: no registration wait, no referral discussion, no language barrier. You pay for the test yourself; it is not billed to Dutch health insurance.
