Eosinophils

What It Measures

Eosinophils are white blood cells that play a role in allergic reactions and in defence against parasites. This test measures how many eosinophils you have in your blood.

Why It Matters

A raised eosinophil count can indicate an allergy, asthma or a parasitic infection. They therefore give useful information about your immune system.

When to Test

Eosinophils are usually measured within a complete blood count, for example with allergy symptoms, asthma or skin complaints.

Symptoms

Low Levels

A low eosinophil count rarely has consequences and usually causes no symptoms.

High Levels

A raised count is common with allergies, asthma or a parasitic infection.

Lifestyle Tips

If you have allergy or asthma symptoms, avoiding known triggers can help. Discuss persistent symptoms with your doctor.
